The 24/7 drug disposal box in the NTPD office has gained traction in the community since opening in early June.
The Med-Return Drug Collection Unit that Northampton police revealed in early June has gathered a substantial amount of unwanted drugs, said Officer Joe Rosowski. "It's something we never conceived that we'd have so many drugs to dispose of," Rosowski said. He said his guess is more than 100 pounds of unwated prescription drugs have been dropped off to the secure steel box. "When the box was first installed, we were emptying the box on an almost daily basis for several weeks," Chief Barry Pilla wrote in an email. "Although the box requires frequent emptying it has slowed down somewhat." Northampton Township is the first municipality in Pennsylvania to offer a secure drug collection site that is open to the public around the clock, officials announced Thursday morning. The green collection unit will be placed, under constant watch, in the lobby of the police department located on Township Road.
