Follow These Tips to Find a Reliable Mechanic

The Bucks County Officer of Consumer Protection advises car-owners to do their homework carefully when looking for a regular mechanic.

The following was provided by the Bucks County Office of Consumer Protection: Q. I recently graduated from college, have a good job, and was able to finally buy myself a new car. I want to make sure that I follow the maintenance schedule that was recommended by the vehicle manufacturer. The salesman at the dealership highly recommends that I use their service center for routine maintenance and repairs. Some of my friends and co-workers are recommending their mechanics, telling me that some dealership services are overpriced and even that some mechanics tend to take advantage of women, assuming that they are not as knowledgeable about cars.  What do I need to know to make sure I take proper care of my new car without getting ripped off? Beware Texts About Fake Gift Cards

The Bucks County Office of Consumer Protection offers advice to a Warrington man who got a text claiming that he had won a $1,000 gift card.

Q.      I have been holiday shopping at various locations throughout Bucks County ever since Black Friday. It has been a hectic few weeks but I am close to finishing up getting all the items on my list. Then yesterday I received a text message on my cell phone from Best Buy letting me know I had won a $1,000 gift card! What great news; just in time for the holidays! The text directed me to follow the link to their website in order to enter the code number that was included in the text message. I have not done this yet because, when I shared the text with my wife, she said it was a scam and that I did not win anything. I disagree.  I think I did win.  D.M. Warrington A.      In this instance, your wife is correct. After a review of the text…

Do Homework Before Donating a Car

The Bucks County Office of Consumer Protection offers advice to a Langhorne resident worried about the ins and outs of donating a car.

  Q.      I just bought a new car.  My old car still has a few good miles left and I am thinking about donating it to some charity.  I am unsure how to do this and what to look out for.  I do not want this to come back and be a problem, but I also know that there are a lot of people out there who could use a car to get to work.  What should I do?  N.P., Langhorne     A.      Before you donate your vehicle make sure you do some homework.  Check to make sure that the charity is registered to solicit with the charity registration office.  You can reach the Bureau of Charity Donations at 1-800-736-0999.  The Bureau also has a website address at www.dos.state.pa.us.  Find out what happens to the donated car.  Some programs give your car to a …

Unexpected Charge Appears on Utility Bill

The Bucks County Office of Consumer Protection offers advice to an Ivyland resident who noticed an unusual charge on a bill for cable, internet and telephone service.

Q.      Recently I ordered a bundled package from a provider for my telephone, cable and internet service.  When the first bill came in I noticed a charge for almost $10.00, and the monthly pricing was not the rate I had been promised.  I never received a written outline of the pricing they had promised.  I had no idea what that extra charge was for, so I called the company.  I have still not received an answer.  I would appreciate any help you can provide.  L.G., Ivyland         A.      We applaud you for taking the time to actually go though the bill.  Many consumers are so rushed they just take for granted that a bill from the utility or credit card company is correct and just send the payment without going over the statement.  The …
