Sunsational Week Lies Ahead

The next few days will be the coolest we've seen since June, with low humidity.

Arguably the most wonderful time of the year is upon us in the weather world.  With apologies to Andy Williams, I think September and October are much more "wonderful" since days are still mild, humidity is low, and one can fully enjoy the weather without sweating or freezing.  This week marks the first of those weeks, thanks to Saturday's front that blew through the region and pushed the tropical humidity out of here.  The upcoming couple of days will be the coolest we've been since June and for those who hate humidity, feel free to celebrate. Instead of dew points in the 70's, high temperatures will be in the 70's for both Monday and Tuesday. With dew points much lower, nighttime temperatures will also drop off quite a bit. In the 'burbs…

Weather: After Damp Start, a Fine Week Ahead

The week's weather starts on a damp note but should generally be nice and not too hot.

We've had a rainy run the past couple of weeks—the Philadelphia-area has picked up over four inches of rain since Aug. 1. Outside of a wet start to Monday, most of the week ahead should feature rather nice weather. Monday's rainy start is associated with a disturbance that is riding along the cool front that pushed through the region on Friday night and Saturday. Once this gets out of the way later in the morning hours, Monday afternoon should wind up nice. The other potential chance of rain in the work week is on Wednesday, with a weak trough that will pass through the region and up the coast. It could trigger a few passing showers as it moves through. Outside of Wednesday, the next chance of showers may not be until next Sunday or Monday…

A Break From High Heat This Week

Summer's grip of nastier heat is slowly easing and temperatures this week will be more tolerable.

After 35 90-degree days in the Philadelphia area, the prospect of a week free of mentions of heat index, extreme heat, or heat warnings should make a number of the heat-intolerant locally quite happy. While humidity will still be around on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday the odds of a heat wave or a stretch of 90-degree days is rather remote. We could briefly flirt with 90 on either Monday, Tuesday or Friday but computer modeling from this point suggests highs generally don't get there at all this week. Despite the lack of heat in the coming days, there will be humidity (as we mentioned) and a couple of rounds of thunderstorms moving through the region. The first will be Tuesday afternoon and evening with a cool front approaching the region. …

Storm Chances Increase Again Later this Week

After a summery and tropical weekend, the coming work week features nicer weather for a few days...and more storm chances later on.

The front that was responsible for bringing thunderstorms to our region on Sunday will cross the region throughout Monday. While lingering shower and storm chances, especially to our south and east, will prevent a wholly nice day, the region will see its latest streak of 90 degree weather come to a thankful end. High pressure builds for Tuesday and most of Wednesday, dropping dew points to the much more tolerable 50s and lower 60s, making Tuesday and Wednesday the "nicest" weather days of the coming week. However, as we all know from past August weather, low humidity in August is a fleeting proposition.   As the high nudges off the coast later Wednesday, we'll see an increase in dew points and a slow, gradual increase in thunderstorm …

Unsettled and Muggy, Typical For August

A week with more chances for thunderstorms is in the forecast. Combined with muggy weather, it will feel like a good ol' fashioned August week.

July 2012 will end up as one of the top three hottest months in Philadelphia's records once the month ends this Tuesday. The only question is whether it finishes second or third. We won't know that answer with certainty until Tuesday night, but it should not end up as hot as last July, which is the hottest on record in Philly. This week won't feature excessive or gut-wrenching heat but it will feature unsettled weather thanks to a trough in the atmosphere that is going to park itself just off the East Coast. This will provide for chances of thunderstorms on a number of days this week—with the greatest chances for storms on Tuesday, Wednesday, and also on Saturday into Sunday. With two disturbances tracking through during those timeframes, …

Some Chances for Storms this Week

A couple of cool fronts will cross the region this week, offering the region a few chances to get some additional needed rainfall.

Rainfall deficits so far this year throughout Southeastern Pennsylvania run between five and nine inches, which generally means that the region has seen about two-thirds to four-fifths of what is considered "normal" rainfall. While we don't need nor want a repeat of last August and September around here, lawns and gardens wouldn't mind more rainfall. Last week's two (three for some locations) bouts of rain—one on Sunday, scattered on Wednesday, and the other on Friday—definitely helped. More is on the way this week. Thunderstorm chances are in the forecast for late Monday and again on Tuesday as a frontal boundary out to our west crosses the region over those two days.  Thunderstorms will be scattered so not everyone will see rainfall. …
