Two Marines and an Army Ranger were honored Wednesday by the Northampton Township Board of Supervisors. The ceremony was part of the Northampton Township Patriots Flag program. Marine Sergeant Nioclas Hope of Richboro was welcomed home from a recent deployment in Afghanistan. Corporal Dan Croak of Churchville and Army Ranger Terrence McGovern had flags placed back in the township’s display. Sgt. Hope recently returned from a second deployment in Afghanistan. Kathy and George Croak were there to place the Marine flag in the display representing their son, Corporal Dan Croak, who deployed this week to Afghanistan. The Northampton Township Board of Supervisors on Wednesday presented resident Rick Leonetti with a Distinguished Citizen Award.
Rick Leonetti, founder of Athletes Helping Athletes and a Northampton resident, was recognized by the Board of Supervisors Wednesday with a Distinguished Citizen Award. Board Chairwoman Kimberly Rose called Leonetti a "role model and inspiration" for his work to help local special needs athletes. During the award presentation, Leonetti said the effort started 11 years ago and has "grown into something that has been abolsutiely amazing. I’m extremely grateful." Northampton Township is looking to improve its recreation complex and is seeking aid from the state to carry out the repairs. The Board of Supervisors on Wednesday approved a resolution authorizing the township administration to apply for a $250,000 grant through the state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. The grant, which must be matched equally by the township, will be used to make parking and traffic flow improvements at the complex plus other enhancements. Township officials say improvements include the addition of more than 100 parking spaces, a reconfiguration of access points, ensuring the facilities are up to date on ADA compliance, new field lights and more. There was a Northampton Patriots Flag Exchange for Army Captain Kevin Loughnane at Wednesday's Northampton Township Board of Supervisors meeting. Loughnane recently returned from deployment in Afghanistan but could not be there for the presentation. His parents, Pat and Bill Loughnane, accepted the flag on his behalf. Navy Corpsman Bryan Lynn was welcomed home during a flag exchange event Monday at the Northampton Township building. Peter Palestina, coordinator of the Northampton Patriots Flag Program, and the Northampton Township Board of Supervisors honored Lynn, who recently returned from deployment in Afghanistan. The Northampton Patriots Flag Program began in 2003 to honor residents serving in Operation Iraqi Freedom. The program has since expanded to include Afghanistan and other hostile areas. The Northampton Board of Supervisors have approved two ordinances they hope will avoid another cell tower fight.
The Northampton Township Board of Supervisors on Wednesday approved two ordinances that they hope will prevent a battle similar to the one fought with American Tower Corporation. Last year, dozens of Northampton residents were outraged when the private company began installing new towers in their neighborhoods without notification. A settlement was reached between the township and the company but now local officials are taking steps to ensure a similar situation does not reoccur. The ordinances include a telecommunications facilities ordinance and a right-of-way management ordinance.
