Should DUI Alcohol Limit Be Lowered to .05 Percent?

The National Transportation Safety Board recommends reducing the limit. Some say it would save lives. Others say it's unreasonable.

One drink could be the standard for drunken driving – at least for some people if the National Transporation Safety Board has its way. On Tuesday, the NTSB recommended states lower the blood-alcohol threshold for driving under the influence from 0.08 percent to 0.05 percent. What do you think? Is the proposal reasonable? About 10,000 deaths a year are related to drunken driving. The NTSB says the lower limit would save 500 to 800 lives a year. Officials at the American Beverage Institute called the proposal "ludicrous." It said the average woman could reach the 0.05 percent limit by having one drink. Internationally, only a handful of countries, including Canada, the United States and England, have a BAC limit of .08 while most of the …

DUI Charges Pending for Holland Man After Car Crash

In a recent blotter, police detailed a car crash that may result in DUI charges.

DUI charges will be filed after a 21-year-old Holland man refused a blood test after a car crash, according to a police blotter. On Wednesday, Dec. 26 at 12:38 a.m., officers responded to a single vehicle accident on Buck Road at the Railroad overpass bridge by Falcon Drive, a police report said. On arrival they found a vehicle that had struck the bridge wall and sustained disabling damage. Both the vehicle’s driver and its passenger were transported by ambulance to the Saint Mary Medical Center for treatment of their injuries.  While at the hospital, officer’s observations of the driver, a 21-year-old from Holland, led to their asking that he submit to the drawing of blood samples for analysis, which he refused. Police reported to incidents of underage drinking, burglary and DUI in a recent blotter.

In addition to pending DUI charges for the intoxicated man who drove to the Northampton Township Police Department to complain about being fired from his job, police reported to incidents of underage drinking, burglary and another DUI. Burglary – Residential - Forced Unit block of Woodstream Drive On Tuesday, Dec. 11 a resident of the unit block of Woodstream Drive reported having returned home at 5:30 p.m. to find that some had forced entry in to the home. The last family member left the house at about 8:30 a.m. A laptop computer was taken from the home. Drunk Man Drives to Police Station; DUI Charges Pending

DUI charges are pending for an intoxicated man who drove to the police department to complain about being fired from his job.

Charges for DUI are pending after a man, who showed signs of intoxication, drove to the Northampton Township Police Department to complain about being fired from his job, according to police reports. Just before 8 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 13, a man who walked into the Northampton Township Police Head Quarters displayed signs of intoxication and was in an agitated state over having been terminated by his employer, a police blotter said. Officers found that the 53-year-old Newtown man had driven to the station.  He was unable to successfully complete a series of field dexterity tests and was taken into custody on suspicion of having been driving while under the influence. Police recently responded to reports of vandalism, burglary, theft and more.

In addition to the pending DUI charges for a man who fled a car crash, Northampton Township police also reported to incidents of criminal mischief, burglary, vandalism and more. Criminal Mischief 500 block of Hollyknoll Drive A resident on the 500 block of Hollyknoll Drive reported that sometime after 5 p.m. on Nov. 19 his vehicle was vandalized. A headlight was broken along with a plastic piece around a passenger side window. The manufacturer’s symbol was also ripped off of the vehicle. Man Found at Home After Fleeing Scene of Car Crash; DUI Charges Pending

According to a police blotter, a Southampton man crashed into a utility pole, fled the scene, abandoned the vehicle and was found at home.

Charges relating to DUI are pending after a Southampton man crashed into a utility pole, fled the scene, abandoned the vehicle in a wooded area and was found at home, police said in a recent blotter. A motorist reported witnessing a traffic crash on Chinquapin Road off of Buck Road, at 10:47 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 25, where a vehicle struck a utility pole and then fled the scene. The striking vehicle reportedly became disabled off of Bristol Road.  Officers located the vehicle with extensive damage in a wooded area on Bristol Road near Murray Road, according to the police blotter. The vehicles registered owner, a 43-year-old man from Southampton, was located at his home near where the vehicle was found. Man Found Asleep Behind the Wheel; DUI Charges Pending

A driver asleep in his running vehicle may be charged with a DUI after results from lab reports are received, according to a recent police blotter.

A Holland man who was asleep in his running vehicle may be charged with a DUI after results from lab reports are received, Northampton Township Police said. Just after 9 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 18 an officer on patrol discovered an occupied vehicle running with its operator asleep behind the wheel in the 100 block of Mulberry Drive by South Timber Road, according to a recent police blotter. The officer woke the driver, who was a 52-year-old man from Holland, reports said. Observations of the driver led an officer to ask him to perform a series of field dexterity tests. Police: 66-Year-Old Man Hit Parked Car

DUI charges are pending a lab report, after a man struck a parked car while driving, according to police reports.

Northampton Township Police reported to the scene of a traffic crash, where the driver of a vehicle struck a parked car, according to a recent police blotter. On Thursday, Oct. 25 around 11 p.m., officers investigated a traffic crash in the 100 block of Bellwood Drive. A vehicle that was being driven by a 66-year-old man from Langhorne struck a parked car. The man's car had to be towed from the scene due to the extent of damage, reports said. Police observations of the man, along with his inability to successfully complete a series of field dexterity tests, led to his being taken into custody on suspicion of having been driving while under the influence. Northampton Township Police reported to three incidents over the weekend that could result in DUI charges.

Northampton Township Police reported to three incidents, one on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, that could result in DUI charges, according to a recent police blotter released on Monday, Oct. 15. On Friday, Oct. 12, an officer stopped a vehicle for erratic driving on 2nd Street Pike by New Road around 4:45 p.m., reports said. The operator, a 26-year-old male from Jamison, was found to be driving while his operating privileges were suspended. Northampton Township Police responded to two separate DUI-related car crashes on Saturday, Oct. 6 and Sunday, Oct. 7.

Police responded to two DUI-related car crashes over the weekend, according to a police blotter released on Monday, Oct. 8. Officers received a report that a vehicle had crashed into a utility pole in the 300 block of Middle Holland Road at shortly after midnight on Saturday, Oct. 6. On arrival the vehicle operator, a 21-year-old male from Holland, reported being injured, according to police reports. A witness reported that the man's vehicle "simply drove off the road and struck the pole," police said. When the ambulance arrived on the scene, the man refused to go to the hospital.  He was then asked to submit to a series of field dexterity tests, but was unable to even start them.
