BCCC Alum to Address Graduating Class

Illustrator James Bennett returns to BCCC as commencement speaker.

James Bennett, an award-winning illustrator and graduate graduate of Bucks County Community College, will address the 2013 graduating class at its 6 p.m. commencement on Thursday.  Bennett, who still lives in Bucks County, earned an associates degree in fine arts from BCCC, continued his education at the School of Visual Arts in New York after his 1983 graduation.  Bennett's work has appeared in the New York Times, Forbes, Time, Sports Illustrated, Mad, Business Week, Reader’s Digest, and Philadelphia magazines. He has also illustrated books including "Tell Me a Scary Story...But Not Too Scary" by Carl Reiner, and "Halloween" by Jerry Seinfeld. Tyler Tasting Party to Feature Food, Wine and Live Auction

The 24th annual Tyler Tasting Party will be held June 1 from 6:30 to 10 p.m. at Bucks County Community College's Newtown Campus.

Prepare your taste buds for a feast that comes just once a year.  Bucks County Community College’s Tyler Tasting Party will be held June 1 from 6:30 to 10 p.m. The 24th annual event will be held in historic Tyler Hall on the Newtown Campus.  The party will feature a range of food prepared by three dozen restaurants, caterers, bakeries and cafes from throughout the county. Participants include The Pineville Tavern, Palate, oWowCow Creamery, Rose Bank Winery, Zebra Striped Whale, La Stalla and more. (See the full list below.) Culinary Arts Students Have an 'Ice' Day

Students enrolled in Bucks County Community College's Culinary Arts program finish the apprenticeship with a two-week training in ice carving.

After spending three years frying, chopping, mixing and everything else in-between, the future master chefs enrolled in Bucks County Community College's Culinary Arts program took a break from the kitchen knives and broke out the chainsaws last week. The upgrade to power tools is necessary in order to complete the traditional ice-carving capstone project each student needs to finish the school's apprenticeship program. It may seem unusual at first to take the cooks away from the ovens, but culinary arts professor and program coordinator Earl Arrowood says ice-sculpting is an important skill for gourmet chefs to have in their repertoire. Free Concert Series Continues This Week

Bucks County Community College’s Department of the Arts is hosting a free concert series, which continues this week with three performances.

The Bucks County Community College Department of the Arts is in the midst of a free concert series that culminates Thursday with a performance from a big-band style jazz orchestra.  In addition to Thursday's finale, there will be free performances Monday and Wednesday. The Classical Ensembles perform Monday. Classical Ensembles consist of the Low Brass Ensemble under the direction of Brendan Hartz, and the Woodwind Ensemble and Saxophone Quartet, under the direction of Len Pierro. The 50-voice Concert Choir performs Wednesday under the direction of Rochelle Reed and faculty member Edward Ferdinand. The group will perform Mozart’s “Mass in C, K.259,” Eric Whitacre’s “Cloudburst” and a variety of American and English music.  The concert …

Free Concert Series Opens Tonight at BCCC

The Music Area of Bucks County Community College’s Department of the Arts is presenting a six free concerts, which start tonight.

The Music Area of Bucks County Community College’s Department of the Arts is presenting a six free concerts, culminating in a performance by a big-band style Jazz Orchestra. The concerts, which start this week, are part of the school's Arts at Bucks celebrations. All concerts will be held in Presser Music Room in the Music & Multimedia Center beginning at 7:30 p.m. on the Newtown campus. The festivities kick off tonight, when the Chamber Jazz Ensemble presents a free concert.  The concert will feature students performing selections from a repertoire specifically composed for small-group jazz ensembles. Annual Tyler Gardens Lecture, Tour is Saturday

The Sixth Annual Tyler Gardens and Landscape Lecture is Saturday and will feature guest speaker Drew Becher, the president of the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society.

The Sixth Annual Tyler Gardens and Landscape Lecture will be held Saturday at Bucks County Community College's Newtown Campus. Drew Becher, the president of the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, will be the guest speaker. According to event organizers, Becher is a "highly-respected leader in the greening and beautification movement in both Washington, D.C. and New York City." He is a "brilliant speaker who makes the environment and horticulture come alive," a press release from event organizers said.   The event will be held in the college's Gateway Auditorium starting 9:30 a.m. A tour of Tyler Formal Gardens will follow the lecture.  Tickets are $15 for the public and $7 for students. 'Arts at Bucks' Festival Begins Wednesday

The Arts at Bucks festival at Bucks County Community College opens Wednesday and will feature various demonstrations and performances through May 14.

Bucks County Community College’s Arts at Bucks Celebration gets underway this week and will feature free concerts, demonstrations, exhibitions and more in a series of events that are open to the public. Many of the events are free. The month-long celebration begins Wednesday and goes through May 14. "The annual Arts at Bucks festival showcases the talent and academic excellence available at the public, two-year school," according to a BCCC press release. BCCC is one of the few community colleges in the nation that is an accredited institutional member of both the National Association of Schools of Music and the National Association of Schools of Art and Design, the press release said. New High School Poet of the Year to be Honored Sunday

Meghan Jusczak will be honored at a Newtown campus poetry reading Sunday April 21. She’ll be joined by runners-up and finalists in a celebration of young poets from across Bucks County.

Meghan Jusczak, a senior at Central Bucks East High School, has been named the 2013 Bucks County High School Poet of the Year, Bucks County Community College officials announced. The Doylestown resident rose to the top of 145 entries to win the 26th annual contest, part of the Bucks County Poet Laureate Program administered by the college.   Jusczak, who was named third-runner-up last year, won a $300 prize and will be honored at a Newtown campus poetry reading at 3 p.m. Sunday. She’ll be joined by runners-up and finalists in a celebration of young poets from across Bucks County. An anthology containing the winning poems and a poem from each entrant, Writes of Passage Vol. 3, will be distributed to those in attendance. An avid writer, …

BCCC Tuition to Increase

Tuition for Bucks County residents will go from $117 to $123 a credit starting this fall at Bucks County Community College.

Tuition at Bucks County Community College will increase by $6 a credit starting in the fall. That's an increase of $144 a year for a student taking 12 credits each semester.  The Bucks County Community College Board of Trustees on Thursday voted 14-0 to increase the tuition; the technology fee remains the same.  According to information provided by the college, tuition for county residents will increase from $117 to $123 a credit during the 2013-14 academic year. Tuition for out-of-county residents will go from $234 to $246 and out-of-state residents from $351 to $369. In the fall, a student taking 12 credits a semester will pay $3,866 for 24 credits (including technology and activities fees) during the 2013-14 academic year. For a …
