Cindy and Ed Hughes participated in a flag presentation at the township building to honor their recently deployed son, Christopher.
The parents of a recently deployed Army soldier were honored as part of Northampton Township's Patriot Flag Program at the November Board of Supervisors meeting. Cindy and Ed Hughes placed an Army flag in the display case to represent their son Christopher, who was deployed to Afghanistan on Nov. 4. "I think it is great you honor those who serve," Ed Hughes said. "Chris is a great kid. We've already skyped him." Both Ed and Cindy spoke highly of the flag program and said they appreciate the township's effort. Supervisor Chairman Frank Rothermel said it's a way to show appreciation for those who serve. The supervisors had several awards to give out and presentations to make at Wednesday night's monthly meeting.
Wednesday night's Board of Supervisors meeting in the Administration Building was full of community members and accolades for them. The meeting began by Supervisors' recognition of the positive efforts by Northampton citizens and servicemen that made a beaming Chairman George Komelasky say, “This is what makes Northampton a great place to be.” The supervisors and Pete Palestina of the Marine Corps League led a Patriots ceremony to welcome home Army Specialist Ryan Berk. Accompanied by his family, friends and many fellow supporting citizens, including children from St. Bede’s, Berk was presented with awards from both Representatives Mike Fitzpatrick (R-8) and Scott Petri (R-Bucks). Tonight at the Board of Supervisors meeting, one patriot's return will be celebrated with a flag ceremony.
Before the supervisors discuss a land development hearing or discuss selling extra township equipment, they get to do something many truly enjoy – welcome home another serviceman from his duties overseas. Army Specialist Ryan Berk was deployed to Afghanistan in August, 2010, and received a purple heart for wounds he endured during his service. Tonight, the supervisors will return his Army flag to him and replace it in the display with an American flag. In addition, Army Major Eric Swenson's parents, Janet and Ray Swenson, will attend the meeting to place their son's Army flag back in the display. The Department of Defense confirmed the sergeant's death in a release Monday. There will be a candlelight vigil Friday at 8 at the Dembowski Memorial Park in Richboro.
Sergeant First Class Kenneth B. Elwell, 33, of Holland, died on duty in Afghanistan on July 17, according to a release by the Department of Defense. Elwell, along with Private First Class Tyler M. Springman, 19, of Hartland, Maine, were serving in the Kandahar province when "enemy forces attacked their unit with an improvised explosive device," the release said. Both were assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 21st Infantry Regiment, 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division of Fort Wainwright, Alaska. They were participating in Operation Enduring Freedom at the time of attack, the release said.
