Miracle League Field to Open This Weekend

The Miracle League of Northampton will hold its opening day April 22.

The time has come for a new season of Miracle League baseball – but after three years of hard work, they finally have a home turf.

While most of the Miracle League's activity up until this point has been all about the fundraising, Katz said now it can be all about the kids.

The so far, with the field's final surface being poured last week. All that's left then is the paint, the scoreboard and the kids to fill it.

The league's plan is to make Opening Day a huge celebration. There will be a short parade at 2 p.m. feauturing the kids, some surprise guests, banners and hopefully a band. They'll have a short dedication and then a special first game.

The Miracle League is a national charitable organization with localized chapters whose purpose is to provide a baseball/softball league for special needs children.

While the Northampton league has been established for several years, they've never had a field to call their own until now. They  and have been moving at a quick pace since then.

"Now because of the Miracle League [my son] actually has friends. It gives all the kids a social life," said Tracy Malloy, of Feasterville.

"She loves it," said Robin Young, whose daughter Heather has been playing for five years. "It's one big family. Kids give each other what they need."

Young said because they know each other so well, they've formed very strong bonds and are able to afford patience and understanding outsiders may not.

Katz said it's really about more than the sports; it's about the kids being able to come together and form meaningful friendships.
