'Millions for Mike' Will Help Local Family

Proceeds go toward the family's medical bills and similar expenses.

The Taubs didn't ask for the devastation they've endured for the past year and a half after husband and father Mike Taub was in a serious car accident, but an event this weekend will help them overcome some of the financial burden.

Two family friends have organized a benefit for the Holland-area family to help pay medical bills and other expenses. It will take place from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday, March 24 at General Grants American Bar and Grill, 2457 Grant Ave., Philadelphia.

A $30 ticket buys 10 raffle entries and dinner – a beef and beer buffet. Organizer Tara Alker said she's gathered all types of raffle prizes from Phillies tickets to a country club membership to a party at a local bowling alley.

This isn't the first fundraiser for the family, who have been struggling since Mike was in a serious car accident on Nov. 8, 2010. Alker said they've organized one every couple months because that's when the money starts running out; one at Applebee's, another at Texas Roadhouse. She said it's beginning to get a little harder to get a large attendance.

"We only have 50 committed," she said. "Hopefully it'll pick up."

The Taub family has four school-aged children, and Alker said all the money goes straight to the family to help with major expenses their insurance and a small grant do not cover.

"Although grateful to be home with his family, a life that he has once known is now one of disarray, financial devastation, helplessness and heartache for Mike and his family," a donation request letter said.

The Mike Taub Recovery Fund is always accepting donations, and lists events and more information on its website.

Today is the last day to order tickets by order form. However, Alker said she will honor verbal commitments for people to pay at the door. Let her know at tlalker@comcast.net if you plan to attend.
