The Best Mother's Day Gift Ever

My favorite Mother's Day gift still makes me smile. Tell me one of your favorite Mother's Day memories.

Several years ago my Mother’s Day gift made me jump up and down. I even squealed and clapped my hands.

I felt special. Important. Appreciated. Thrilled. Yes, I was thrilled!

The gift wasn’t jewelry, perfume, or flowers. It wasn’t a day at the spa. It wasn’t breakfast in bed, a picnic lunch on the beach or dinner at a nice restaurant.

That year, I asked for a specific gift. Steve thought I was joking at first. He raised his eyebrows. I said it again. Again with the eyebrows. I assured him that this was all I wanted. Truly. Saturday morning he went shopping. He came home and he went to work under the kitchen sink.

Our dog was about a year old at the time, and he was obsessed with the kitchen trash. No constant changing of the bag, no vigilance, nothing kept him from his objective. The trash can had a lid, but Caspian was tall enough to push his nose up under the lid and help himself to whatever he could steal. We tried a taller trash can with a scarier lid, but that didn’t stop him.

So what was this amazing gift and what did the dog have to do with it? It was a trash can. The kind that rolls under the sink and sits behind a door the dog can’t open.

No Mother’s Day gift will never outdo the disappearing trash can. I can’t even remember what Steve’s Father’s Day gift was that year. I suspect he would say it was my reaction when he gave me the desire of my heart - a trash can.
