South Choir to Travel to Costa Rica

The group is planning a trip for the 2012-2013 school year.

Is there a better way to spend winter break than in sunny Central America?

Members of Council Rock South's choral department will get to do just that as they are planning a trip this year to Costa Rica.

"Students will be travelling to and experiencing active volcanoes, preserved rain forests, Flora and Fauna not found anywhere else in the world, and welcoming local people ... they would have the opportunity to exchange cultures with," Director Corey Axler said.

It wasn't an easy decision – many families have felt the burden of financial strains in the past year and Axler said wanted to find a way to find a compromise between an expensive European trip and having to stay domestic.

Other high school musical groups have traveled to "musical hot spots" like Englad, Wales, France and many others. They also braved difficult traveling circumstances like 9/11 and a SARS outbreak, he said.

"I was faced with the realization that our country is struggling financially to make ends meet, and to offer a trip to my students that they simply could not afford did not seem fair," Axler said.

He said he found that Costa Rica was the perfect mix because students' cost is roughly $1,000 less than a trip to Europe but the destination is still exciting. The approximate cost per student is $2,200.

The choir will be holding fundraisers to help cover the trip, with the next one coming up just next week.

Community members are invited to a pasta night with live music performed by the choir on March 23. It will be held from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at and the cost is $10 for adults, $5 for children 12 and under.

They are also selling discount movie tickets and pies, both of which are ongoing fundraisers.

From 6 to 9 on the night of April 10, they will host a Choral Festival as yet another benefit.

Students will travel from Dec. 27 to Jan. 3, 2012, missing only two days of school. More information can be found on their website at www.southchoirs.com.
