School Board Approves More Redistricting

After three months of informational meetings and discussions, the school board passed another redistricting motion last night effective in the coming school year.

With only one negative vote, the Council Rock School Board of Directors passed a motion last night to redistrict two of its elementary schools so the full population of each will go to different middle schools.

Under the motion, which begins for the 2011-2012 schools year, all students from will attend and all students from will attend .

“I do understand there are reasons why you could hold for two years and reasons why we want to proceed,” Klein said. “This is the right year to do it.”

Klein explained that in two years the enrollment at Richboro Middle could dip below 400, leaving the school virtually unable to run all the programs offered at other district schools.

“Shifting this population is not haphazard,” he said. “The purpose is to make sure we get kids at Richboro Middle School so the two are functionally the same.”

He assured parents and the board that every student will be provided as equal of opportunities and resources as possible at both middle schools and that the transition would be as smooth as possible.

In regards to how it monetarily affects the district, Klein said there should be little or no increase or decrease in transportation costs.

Officials have held informational meetings for three months to inform both the Rolling Hills and Churchville Elementary communities about the change and the reasons behind it, but some parents during public comment said they felt like three months was not enough time.

The next school board meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 17 in the .
