New Foundation to Support 9th Grade Sports

The Council Rock Sports Foundation is a new initiative that answers the challenge of how to accomodate ninth grade atheletes.

After the Council Rock School Board of Director's announcement last year to , a team of community members decided they were going to do something about it.

That's why, half a year later, Ken Hone and Bob Roda announced they are in the process of creating the Council Rock Sports Foundation, a 501(c)(3) that would take community donations and funnel them to the school district to allow them to continue sports programs.

The donations, which would remain completely anonymous, would not be allocated to a specific sport, but rather would be spread among the programs that ninth grade students show interest in.

Hone said the team wants to "preserve the benefits of sports" while cutting down costs. These benefits include learning teamwork and having an enriched experience.

Roda said the "pilot" program isn't just to make it through one season, but rather they want to develop a sustainable community partnership with the school district.

"We want to still allow our student athletes to have that rich experience of putting on a Council Rock jersey regardless of what sport," he said.

A few ways they might tackle the issue is having a condensed season with fewer games. Atheletes might practice fewer days per week and may not have a game every week either. However, as in the case with baseball and softball, there would still be an interscholastic tournament at the end of the season.

Those two spring sports are in the works for this year and would possibly have what the team calls "abridged" seasons.

The foundation is still in the works, and interested community members can contact them at crsf@crsd.org to find out more or get involved.
