CR South Grad Needs Marrow Transplant

A bone marrow donor drive will be held on Saturday, Nov. 24.

Nick is a 21-year-old Council Rock South graduate who was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma two years ago. He needs a marrow transplant.

Nick's brother and sister were tested, but aren't a match, so in attempt to find a match, a marrow donor drive will be held Saturday, Nov. 24 at the Northampton Township Administration Building.

"He needs a marrow transplant," Richboro resident Harry Murray told the board of supervisors on Nov. 14. "We are running out of options and his life depends on help from you and I."

Murray explained that Nick has gone through grueling medical procedures, but has not complained once, and that he is actually more concerned about how his mom and dad are coping with his disease.

Hodgkin's Lymphoma—formerly known as Hodgkin's disease—is a cancer of the lymphatic system, which is part of the immune system, according to the Mayo Clinic. It compromises the body's ability to fight infection as it progresses.

Though the actual donation is a surgical procedure, the testing process is quite easy.

"The test is a simple swab of the cheek," Murray said. "It's just a swab."

From 12 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 24 people between the ages of 18 and 44 can head to the township building to get tested. People between the ages of 45 and 60 can go to BeTheMatch.org to register and get tested.

If you're a match for a marrow donation, it is a surgical outpatient procedure that takes place at a hospital, according to Be The Match. Donors receive anesthesia and feel no pain during the donation. Doctors use a needle to withdraw liquid marrow from the back of your pelvic bone, and the marrow replaces itself completely within 4 to 6 weeks. Learn more about the donation process here.

Supervisor and Treasurer Kimberly Rose added that, "It's very important for our township to get behind Nick and get tested."

Thank you for posting this story! My birthday is in a few days and my children didnt know what to get me. I really do not need anything, nor really want anything. When I read this story, I suggested that for my birthday, we all get "swabbed". And they all agreed...it was the best birthday present ever! I truly hope that this family fines a match for their son!
