Vets, Scouts Dispose of Old Flags

Members of the Northampton Township Board Supervisors and the Township Veterans Advisory held a Flag Disposal Ceremony on Tuesday night.

The Board of Supervisors and the Township Veterans Advisory held a Flag Disposal Ceremony on Tuesday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Northampton Municipal Park.      Boy scouts from Troops No. 5, based in Churchville, and No. 240, based at Saint Vincent de Paul, along with firefighters from Engine 83 of the Northampton Fire Department helped community members dispose of old flags properly.

There is a proper way to put a flag to rest. The blue field is removed first and then each stripe is cut off individually. Finally pieces of flag are put into the fire.

The ceremony included numerous speakers like Scoutmaster Tim Hough, Master of Ceremonies, and veteran Pete Palestina, Board of Supervisors Vice President Vincent Deon, Marine Colonel Tom Manion, and musical performances by Linda Deis and her Holland Middle School Choir.
