Two Marines, Army Ranger Honored Wednesday

Wednesday's ceremony was part of the Northampton Township Patriots Flag program.

Two Marines and an Army Ranger were honored Wednesday by the Northampton Township Board of Supervisors. The ceremony was part of the Northampton Township Patriots Flag program.

Marine Sergeant Nioclas Hope of Richboro was welcomed home from a recent deployment in Afghanistan. Corporal Dan Croak of Churchville and Army Ranger Terrence McGovern had flags placed back in the township’s display.

Sgt. Hope recently returned from a second deployment in Afghanistan. Kathy and George Croak were there to place the Marine flag in the display representing their son, Corporal Dan Croak, who deployed this week to Afghanistan.  Ranger McGovern will be deploying again to Afghanistan in a few weeks.

The Northampton Patriots Flag program began in 2003 to honor residents serving in Iraq. The program, started by then supervisor Peter Palestina, has since expanded to include Afghanistan and other hostile areas. The flag display holds flags representing the branch of service and identifying the resident with a yellow streamer with his or her name affixed to it. When the person returns home, his or her military flag is replaced with an American flag.

When the program began, the township knew of 24 active military residents. Today, there are 79 total flags in the display.
