Township to Hold Flag Day Ceremony

Before Americans celebrate their independence, they honor the Star-Spangled Banner on Flag Day, Thursday, June 14.

To commemorate the adoption of the American Flag and to observe , Northampton Township will hold a flag disposal ceremony at Northampton Township Municipal Park from 7 to 8 p.m.

At the event, the public is invited and encouraged to take their old or tattered U.S. flags to the ceremony for proper disposal.

"Many people are not aware that there is a proper way to dispose of the flag," said Pete Palestina, the event's coordinator. "The customary method is by way of a ceremonial flag burning conducted by proper protocol."

Residents may bring their tattered flags at any time during the ceremony, but if they cannot attend the ceremony on June 14, flags can be dropped off in advance to the following locations: the and buildings on Township Road, the or any of the three Northampton firehouses (, and ).

The program will begin with opening remarks followed by posting of the colors by the Color Guard from the Marine Corps League’s Patriot Detachment No. 1230 Richboro, the singing of the National Anthem by the BucksMont Squires of Song and the Pledge of Allegiance. After a keynote address from Vietnam War hero and Medal of Honor Nominee David Christian, the flags will be burned by Churchville Boy Scout Troop No. 5 and St. Vincent DePaul Boy Scout Troop No. 240 until all flags have been properly disposed.

Those who attend the event will receive a flag compliments of Lynne Kelleher and a potted plan courtesy of Gasper Landscaping.
