Socks for Soliders Drive Underway

Local resident Kathy Croak has started a drive to collect 5,000 socks by Oct. 1.

It all started with a call home from the military base in Lejeune, NC.

Kathy and George Croak's son Dan is serving in the Marines currently. He was sent off at a . During one of his few phone calls to his parents, Dan mentioned that he and his battalion were going through their socks rather quickly, Kathy said.

"Their feet really take a beating," she said, adding they frequently spend time with feet submerged in water and otherwise.

Coupled with their infrequent chance to do laundry, many marines end up having to throw away their socks. And though the military provides them with replacements, they don't work nearly as well as good quality boot socks, she said.

Kathy decided to take her son's simple request and run with it. After some quick Googling, she contacted Northampton Township Vice Chairman Vincent Deon, and within a few weeks the "Socks for Soldiers" program was in place.

Locals can drop off new white boot socks, or socks that go above the calf, at the Administration Building. Or, there is a partnership in the works with local Famous Footwear locations, Deon announced. The stores might even work out a deal with a sock vendor that allows patrons to buy a pair of socks and be able to donate one directly. Details are still to come on this deal.

The Board of Supervisors meeting Wednesday night was the first unveiling of the boxes, provided by Waste Management.
