The Northampton Township Police Department warns of a new scam that recently targeted the Department of Public Works.
On Thursday, July 5, a phone scam was attempted on Northampton Township's Department of Public Works, according to police.
Chief of Police Barry Pilla wants the community to be aware of the scam that targeted the township, and could potentially target local businesses and residents.
The Department of Public Works began receiving calls from a company that wanted the department to renew or reject a contract to continue advertising in the Yellow Pages, a press release from the police department said.

The caller identified himself as David Lewis, badge number 5463, according to police. His voice was described as having a heavy accent, similar to that of someone from India or a similar country.
The caller asked for the department's contact information so that a bill for the past year's dues of $399.99 could be sent. The caller then said once payment was received, the company would send paperwork to delete the account.

The Department of Public Works informed the caller that he had phoned a branch of government that does not advertise, and asked in what book the advertisement could be found and where specifically in that book. The caller then placed the call on hold for ten seconds before hanging up.
