Cans Pile Up in Lot

New 64-gallon recyclable cans sit unused in the recreation center parking lot.

Wednesday afternoon, in one of the parking lots at the , dozens upon dozens of new, unused green 64-gallon recyclable cans - provided to the township at - sat empty, a few even filling with stagnant rainwater.

A Northampton resident and Patch reader, who requested to remain anonymous, e-mailed this question: "What's going to happen with the extra containers sitting in the rec center parking lot by the ball fields?"

When asked Thursday morning about the vacant cans in the parking lot, Parks and Recreation Director Nancy Opalka said she had not heard of the issue but would look into the matter.

About an hour later township public works crews had been dispatched to empty the water from the cans, Opalka said during a follow-up call.

In the next few days, Opalka stated she and the public works director, who was out of the office Thursday, will begin discussions on possibly relocating the cans from the recreation center lot.

When the 64-gallon green containers arrived, the parking lot served as a staging area for crews from waste-hauler J.P. Mascaro to distribute the approximately 12,500 cans. The cans that remain are extras.
