Bucks Conservation District Gets $173K Grant to Protect Watershed

By Jack Tobias

With clean water as the goal, the Bucks County Conservation District and two programs in Montgomery County will share more than $20.65 million in grants for projects to improve watersheds, reduce stormwater runoff and acid mine drainage, and support educational programs.

Gov. Tom Corbett and the state Department of Environmental Protection announced the grants last week.

About $15.12 million will come from the Growing Greener program, funded by the Environmental Stewardship Fund. The grants will cover 97 projects around the state.

Four additional projects, funded by the Surface Mining Conservation and Reclamation Grant, will receive $1.95 million. Two additional grants, totaling $406,975, are funded by the AMD (Abandoned Mine Drainage) Set Aside Program.

Another $3.17 million will come from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Section 319 Nonpoint Source Management Program, created through the federal Clean Water Act to help reduce water pollution from nonpoint sources. That money will cover 15 additional projects.

The following are the Bucks and Montco grant recipients:

BUCKS COUNTY

• Bucks County Conservation District, North Branch Neshaminy Creek Agricultural BMP: $173,477.93

MONTGOMERY COUNTY

• Jenkintown School District, Water Harvest Irrigation System: $78,500
• Upper Merion Township, Crow Creek Watershed Restoration: $78,570
