Philipp was then stopped by police at Buck and East Holland roads, where he engaged in gunfire with officers, according to published reports. An officer was shot, but saved by his bullet-proof vest, according to Phillyburbs.com.

It was not immediately clear if the officer fired the fatal shot or if Phillip committed suicide, the article reported.

The 50-year-old man was a familiar face to local police. In November, he was arrested outside of his ex-wife’s home with a knife.

In 2011, Northampton police said an unidentified woman reported having a dispute with him and he pulled a knife.  The report provided by police at that time said Philipp “was known to officers due to prior police contacts.”
