Police to Monitor DUIs Through Checkpoints for Holiday Weekend

NTPD will take extra steps to ensure the community is celebrating the holiday safely this weekend.

In an attempt to cut down on the number of DUIs and alcohol-related accidents this Fourth of July weekend, the Northampton Township Police Department will be taking extra measures to ensure the public's safety.

Chief Barry Pilla wrote in an email the department will employ several techniques to accomplish this goal, including roving DUI patrols, undercover cops in alcohol distributors and extra traffic enforcement on certain roads.

The checkpoints are meant to keep motorists under control and interact with them one-on-one, he wrote.

"This technique has been very successful for us in addressing selected traffic issues in specific locations, DUI enforcement and anti-underage liquor law violations," Pilla wrote.

Finally, NTPD will be putting officers undercover as shop clerks or customers in beer, wine and spirits stores or patroling outside as part of its Cops-in-Shops program. Officers will be looking for underaged people attempting to buy alcohol or adults buying products for minors, Pilla wrote.

As usual, they will be on the lookout and taking tips for parties serving alcohol to minors. Anyone with something to report can call the department at (215) 322-6111.
