Elite Firefighter Killed in Arizona Was Richboro Native

One of 19 Granite Mountain Hotshots killed in Arizona on Sunday was a native of Richboro.

One of the 19 elite firefighters killed in an Arizona wildfire was a Richboro native and diehard Eagles fan, according to an NBC 10 report.

Robert Caldwell, 23, moved out west with his family about 18 years ago after living in Bucks County.

Caldwell was known as a smart guy with a good sense of humor, according to Phillyburbs. He was just married in November.

Caldwell was a squad boss of the 20-member Granite Mountain Hotshots based in Prescott, Ariz. north of Phoenix. The crew worked on the front lines of the region's most dangerous fires.

Nineteen of the men were killed in an overpowering wildfire on Sunday. The crew shared a love of hard work and adventure and underwent rigorous physical and mental training, according to a page devoted to the Hotshots on the City of Prescott, Ariz. website.

One of the many messages of sympathy posted on Caldwell's guest book at Legacy.com reads in part:

"What a profound loss for Robert's new wife, stepson and his remaining family and friends. My condolences to everyone experiencing the grief of his tragic passing. I respect, honor and appreciate Robert for the great sacrifice he made to protect others. He is a hero."

Several organizations are raising money for the families of the fallen firefighters:

  • The United Phoenix Fire Fighters charity account, which can be accessed through any Chase Bank in Arizona, by mail at 61 E. Columbus, Phoenix, AZ 85014 or by PayPal.
  • The 100 Club, which you can access here.
  • Wildland Firefighter Foundation, which you can access here.
