DUI Campaign a "Success"

NTPD declared last weekend's extra efforts paid off.

During the holiday weekend, there were no DUI-related crashes or injuries reported, according to a statement by the Northampton Township Police Department.

NTPD announced last week that officers would be conducting a to attempt to reduce the number of DUIs and the amount of underage drinking throughout the weekend. 

With only one DUI arrest and no crash resulting from it, the department declared their efforts "a success."

Police had roving DUI details and undercover officers working or posing as patrons in shops that sell alcohol. They were able to stop a few people and have them provide proof of age after purchasing beverages.

In addition, police issued 20 citations and three traffic warnings.

Even though they didn't conduct any DUI checkpoints, Chief Barry Pilla wrote in an email that the other methods the department utilized are much more effective. 

He also wrote it was his speculation that if they had not been on extra patrol, they would've written about a quarter of the citations they actually did. 

"The purpose of our focus on this issue during specific times is ... to ensure a safe environment for the motorits traveling through Northampton Township," he wrote.
