Northampton Seniors Participated in National Walk@Lunch Day, April 30, 2014

The rain and terrible weather didn't stop the seniors who came to participate in the National Walk@Lunch Day.  Approximately 40 seniors from the James E. Kinney Senior Citizens Center located in Richboro, PA participated in the National Walk@Lunch Day® which is designed to complement—not compete with—a persons busy lifestyle. Created to improve personal health and decrease the costs of healthcare for employers and employees, National Walk@Lunch Day is the start of a new daily walking routine, helping you to improve your health step by step.

This was the 4th time that the Senior Center had participated but, due to the inclement weather, the event was held indoors. Led by Sheila Jobs and Kathy Gurevitch of the Senior Center administration along with Northampton Supervisors Dr. Kimberly Rose and Eileen Silver, the participants checked in, received their instructions and gathered in the large community room where they received their instructions.  Normally done with a two mile walk up and back on Township Road, the event was changed to an aerobic type event led by Dr. Kim Rose. All participants were treated to a free lunch afterwards.  Assisting in the event was Nadine Warder from Independence Blue Cross.  A video clip of the event can be found at http://youtu.be/BpLtJlOoqf8..

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services estimates the cost to treat illness and chronic disease caused by inactive lifestyles is nearly $1,000 for every family in America, every year. Simply getting 30 minutes of moderate physical activity, such as a brisk walk, at least five times a week has significant health benefits, lowering the risk of developing or dying from cardiovascular disease, hypertension or type 2 diabetes, and improving the health of muscles, bones and joints.
