Go Fishing!

Get ready for the 2012 Pennsylvania Trout Season!

Spring is officially upon us! Although with the weather we had last week, I think summer is here! I guess we'll soon be hearing holiday music on the local radio stations.

If you're anything like me, spring means baseball, free Rita's, and fishing! If you're an avid fisher-person, then you should already know that the Neshaminy Creek is one of the best places in the area to catch trout, both native and stocked.

The 2012 Trout season opens this Saturday at 8 a.m., so get to your spot early and do your part to thin the herd. The PA Fish & Boat Commission does an excellent job of stocking our local waters with thousands of trout, both before the season starts and after.

The Neshaminy will be stocked twice, in two different locations: Just above the pedestrian causeway in Tyler State Park and also on Rt. 332, near the Langhorne Players theater.

Every season, I see hundreds of anglers jockeying for a position near these spots in the hopes of catching their limit (five fish, 7 inches or longer). Sure, some of those stocked fish will stay in the general vicinity, but the majority of them will scatter, both upstream and downstream.

Compared to other outdoor sports, fishing is relatively cheap. A 2012 license with a trout stamp will put you back about $33, a good rod and reel will cost you about $50, some tackle and bait should run you about $20. So for around $100, you'll have a lifelong hobby and something to do on those long summer nights.
