Ghost Stories

Local ghost stories.

My family and I are relative newcomers to the area.  Over the years we've lived in lots of places around the country and we can honestly say we have found where we want to spend the rest of our days.  One of the things I love most about living here is the history.  Northampton and the surrounding environs simply drip with the stuff.  I grew in a part of the country that also has a great history but its history came along much later than what surrounds me today.  One of the things that surprises me, however, is the fact that, despite the long history of occupation in the Northampton area, there are relatively few ghost stories.  I have decided to start this blog to provide a forum for sharing your stories about the unexplainable. C'mon, in more than three centuries, there should be something that makes our hair stand up...something that makes our skin crawl...something that makes you scratch your head.  I don't believe this area is as quiet as it seems "paranormally"...if that is a word.  Let's talk.  If you want to remain anonymous, that's okay but I want to hear the story of your experiences.  Whaddya think?

OMG! My children and I are, right now, having a ghost experience in our own home...then we see this posting on Facebook. Cue the scary music. We had two family members die in our house within a year of each other. Since their passing, we have noticed the lights in our dining room buffet, china closet and curio cabinet flicker on and off at random times. This began happening shortly after their deaths when we reorganized our curio cabinet to hold just crystal items. When we finished the cabinet absolutely sparkled and my husband made the comment that his grandmother would have loved to see the cabinet since she loved crystal so much. Within a month we each individually began noticing the lights flickering in the dining room cabinets. While discussing this with my husband my mother-in-law told us she noticed it too. Then the children chimed in. It was decided that we might have a ghost or two in the house and every so often one of the kids goes screaming out of the room when they get too spooked. We were told it could be dust on the light switches (we cleaned them) but there in no indication of it, so our conclusion is we have a ghost. When I arrived home this evening the kids were video taping the lights while trying to communicate with Pop and Mom Mom. Then of course we see you posting on Facebook and come to the conclusion that someone is trying to tell us something.......sort of makes you think doesn't it?

Well, Margaret, I'm pretty sure that your dead relatives aren't talking through me but very nice leadoff story. Creepy and mysterious. One of the things that makes this stuff believable is when more than one person has the same unexplainable happenings. By the way, one of the things I hear all the time is that weird stuff happens when precious or, at least, favorite items are modified or moved in some way. I wonder if there is a connection between the curio cabinet reorganization and the onset of the flickering lights. Any chance you could upload the kids' video? Would you mind coming back every once in a while to give us updates? Thanks for sharing.

I have a question. Why is it that sometimes people describe ghosts as "wearing period clothing"? I suppose I understand the survival of the soul after death but how is it that our clothes follow us to the other side. Not being a smart-alec, I'm just curious.
