Flowers Safe After Overnight Freeze

Local flowers seemed to have dodged a bullet.

Last night's below freezing temperatures did not cause major damage to local gardens, according to Steve Kremp of Kremp Florist, which grows its plants at a facility off Bristol Road in Churchville and sells them at its .

Although the , frost was – for the most part – kept from forming on blooms due to windy weather.

"[The freeze] didn't have much of an effect," Kremp said.

The only real damage will be to some colorful blooms on some trees, but it will not impact the trees' long-term health, the grower said.

Twenty eight degrees is critical when talking about the temperature where plants began to see lasting damage from cold weather. Luckily for local gardeners, Monday's overnight temperatures did not dip below 28 degrees for long, Kremp added.

Strange as it may seem due to this year's unseasonably warm weather, Monday's freeze is not unusual for this time of year. Overnight frost can be common until late spring.

"Best thing to protect [plants from a freeze] is to cover them with sheets and plastic," Kremp said.

Overnight tempatures above freezing are expected for at least the next five days, according to the National Weather Service.
