Cheap Trips: Carnivals, Dairies and Flight

Want to get out of town and go for a trip, but looking to save money? Try one of these three trips you can enjoy on just one tank of gas: the Broomall Fire Company's Annual Spring Carnival in Broomall, the Wings of Freedom Museum in Horsham Heisler Dairy

Broomall Fire Co.'s Annual Spring Carnival

Address: N. Malin Rd. & West Chester Pike, Broomall (across from firehouse)
How Far From Northampton Patch: 32 miles or 46 minutes
Admission: Free to enter; Individual tickets $1.50 each, minimum of two tickets; Block of 25 tickets for $25.00; Block of 56 tickets for $50.00

Hours: 

  • Friday, May 4th, from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m.
  • Saturday, May 5th, from 3 p.m. to 11 p.m.
  • Sunday, May 6th, from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Summary: Rides, games of chance, and food are just a part of the fun. The carnival will also have face-painting, a firefighter dunk tank, and their fire safety trailer on site. The Broomall Fire Co. is 100 percent volunteer. Support these local firefighters by attending the carnival.

The Wings of Freedom Museum

Address: 1155 Easton Road, Horsham
How Far from Northampton Patch: 10 miles or 21 minutes
Admission: Free

Hours: Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday, 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.; Monday and Tuesday, closed.

About: The Wings of Freedom Museum features a collection of preserved aircraft and aviation artifacts. Aircrafts such as the Bell H-13 "Sioux" and the North American FJ-4B "Fury" are on display, in addition to clothing and medal displays and an interactive cockpit simulator. Guided tours are available, and a gift shop with t-shirts and model planes is on premises. Currently, the exhibit contains 14 aircraft and nearly 40 display cases with separate focuses on World War One, the Pitcairn Era, World War Two, the Tuskegee Airmen, the Cold War, Women in Aviation, Korea, Southeast Asia, and contemporary aviation and space exploration.

Heisler's Dairy

How Far From Northampton Patch: 82 miles or 1 hour, 52 minutes
Admission: Free

Hours: Dairy bar is open April through mid-October. Hours vary. Call (570) 668-3399 for more information.

Summary: Heisler's Dairy features 40 flavors of country-fresh ice cream made on the premises. Located among the rolling hills of Schuylkill County, the dairy property includes two 18-hole miniature golf courses, a driving range and the Kiddieland game arcade. For nature lovers, the dairy has 14 bird houses which are home to more than 100 pair of breeding purple martins. The dairy was founded in 1924 and the dairy bar opened in 1957.
