Steve Stein's Deli Now Open in Holland

Steve Stein's Famous Deli and Restaurant has opened its doors in the Gateway Center in Holland.

A new deli and restaurant has moved into the Gateway Center at 102 Buck Rd. in Holland. Steve Stein's Famous Deli-Restaurant is the second location for the family-owned business.

The original location is in Northeast Philadelphia, but owner Steve Stein said he saw the opportunity to expand the business to its second location in Holland. The deli-restaurant opened just before Father's Day in early June, but before then the spot had been vacant for about a year, according to Stein.

And so far, Stein said his place has been warmly received by the locals.

"People are so very nice around here," Stein said. "And they've accepted us very warmly."

While chatting with Patch about the business, Stein would occasionally stop to greet or thank a customer.

"We treat you like you want to be treated," he said. "We don't have our nose up in the air. We are very cordial."

And perhaps this is one reason why some of Stein's original deli-restaurant clientelle has migrated to the new location.

"A lot of these customers are customers from the old store," Stein said.

Some of the customers have already become regulars at the new deli.

The warm welcome and the returning customers all add to the family-friendly atmosphere that fills the restaurant. But the main reason many feel at home at Stein's is because it's a family business.

Stein's daughter, son, wife, brother-in-law and long-time employee, Rob (who Stein says is practically family) all work at the deli and restaurant.

"It's a family thing," he said. "We've been in the food business all our lives."

The Philadelphia location has been in business for more than 50 years, Stein said. He has wanted to expand for awhile, and since his family lives in Southampton closer to home seemed like a good option.

The restaurant serves breakfast and lunch, or customers can pick up deli products at the front of the store.

Though the Jewish-style deli has two parts, Stein said it has one goal: "To give a quality product for a fair price."

Specials that change daily or weekly are offered in both the deli and the restaurant. And there aren't many items on the menu that exceed $10 (unless you're looking at platters or brunch options).

Not only does the deli already have regulars that come in at the same time every day to eat, Stein said he is also a diner at the restaurant."

"I even eat my own food," he laughed. "The food is great."

The option to expand the business in the future is always a possibility, but for now Stein said he wants to remain focused on the Holland location.

"We'll walk first," he said. "I don't want to commit to expanding just yet. We'll see how this will do."

In the near future, Stein said the Holland location may expand its hours and menu to offer dinner. That addition may take place in November, but for now, Stein suggests stopping by for breakfast or lunch and to keep your ears open for changes to come.

The restaurant is open from Monday to Thursday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Friday to Sunday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. The deli is open Monday to Saturday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
