Newtown Theatre has announced its grand opening week schedule.
The 131-year-old theater is reopening later this month and will debut its new digital projector. A grand reopening celebration week will be held from May 26 to 29. Four classic movies have been chosen by the public to be screened during the festivities. Tickets to the movies will cost the same amount they did the year the films were released.
Here’s the schedule:
Monday, May 26: Wizard of Oz at 3 p.m., 5:10 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
Tuesday, May 27: The Godfather at 5 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.
Wednesday, May 28: Singin’ in the Rain at 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.
Thursday, May 29: Casablanca at 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.
Ticket prices are as follows: “The Godfather,” will cost $1.70; “Singin’ in the Rain,” will cost $0.53; “Casablanca,” will cost $0.27; and “Wizard of Oz,” will cost $0.23.
The movies were selected through a single-elimination tournament; voting was held on the theatre’s Facebook page.
A number of sponsors have come forward to underwrite the movies, including Bucks County law firm of Zlock & Coverdale, which is the presenting sponsor.
During its transition to digital, the theatre’s board of directors hired a new manager, Alison Silverman, who comes to Newtown with more than 30 years of movie theater experience. The board also refreshed the theatre lobby with new paint, flooring and carpet and made many other much needed repairs and upgrades.
Over the past two years, Newtown Theatre has raised more than $100,000 from the community for the upgrades.
