Mural Arts Month Comes to Philly

Events will take place during October in the "City of Murals."

Fall can be drab, so brighten up your life by getting out of dodge. Luckily, Philadelphia isn't too far away for fall fun—and our Fall in Philly feature can help guide you there.

If you feel like venturing out a little farther from home, check here for a weekly suggestion of something fun or interesting to do in the City of Brotherly Love. Whether it's a restaurant to try, a festival to attend or special museum exhibits, we'll feature something different every Thursday.

October marks Mural Arts Month, and Philadelphia—the "City of Murals"—will host several events throughout the city. Many events will take place on Saturday, Oct. 15.

From 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturday (and again on the following two Saturday's), check out the Murals & Meals tour. First, take a tour of some of the city's murals then enjoy a VIP lunch at Nina's Tratorria (910 S. 9th St.) with a special presentation by Nick Nastasi, owner of the restaurant. Reservations are required and the cost is $50 per person.

If you're looking to save some money, Bank of America is sponsoring a tour starting at the bank located at 3925 Walnut St. at 9:30 a.m. The Love Letter tour takes participants through the public art project that consists of 50 rooftop murals from 45th to 63rd streets along the Market Street corridor in West Philly. This tour involves walking up several sets of stairs to and from the train, so wear comfy shoes. If the free tour is booked, pay $17 to join a similar tour, which starts at Love Park Welcome Center (1600 JFK Blvd.).

Also for $17 is the Mural Mile Walk. A guide trained by the Philadelphia Mural Arts Program will take you to see 17 Center City murals and will discuss the mural-making tradition in Philly. The entire tour takes about two hours (starting at 11:30 a.m. at the Independence Visitor Center at 6th and Market Streets) and covers 2.5 miles. Reservations are also required for this tour.
