Kids Explore Art Camps in Various Media

There is still time to sign up for summer camps where students can create their own pottery, fiber crafts, and drawings and paintings at Earth Center Pottery.

Art in the morning, pottery in the afternoon! Kids ages nine and up can explore various artistic media at Earth Center Pottery (ECP) this summer. For those who want to explore in-depth fine art techniques, there is a camp for you this August!

This week kids are discovering "The World of Fiber and Its Ancient Origins" with instructor Gina Tavelli. The first half of the week, students designed and created a wall hanging after they learned fiber preparation and various wet felting techniques. Later in the week, they created three-dimensional felted sculpture (the images reflect unfinished pieces).

Next week Tavelli will instruct students on learning about endangered animals and creating animal fiber sculptures in the "More Fiber" camp.

In the afternoons, students form clay pieces with instructor Jennifer Miller who will show them how to create garden art, plates, mugs, animal banks and other wheel-thrown and hand-built clay pieces. Students will also explore glazing and firing techniques using high-fired stoneware clay. On the final day of camp, August 26, students will participate in an outdoor pottery firing in a Raku Kiln, a Japanese technique.

During the weeks of August 15 and August 22, students can learn valuable fine art techniques through "Building a Better Portfolio," with artist Renee Egan at ECP. This program is designed to enhance the serious art student's portfolio in preparation for art school.

Students can sign up for one or both weeks. Participants will focus on composition and assignments done strictly on observation in various media. They will benefit from individual critiques conducted by several professional artists. Representatives from area art schools will review their admission requirements and other valuable information.

Egan taught Building a Better Portfolio at the Artists of Yardley Art Center last year and this July. Her students from last year were accepted into various art schools. These students will be entering area schools such as Temple University's Tyler School of Art this fall.

Egan is a member of Artists of Yardley and exhibits her paintings regularly in local juried shows and galleries. This spring her artwork was selected for the prestigious Ellarslie Open juried art show in Trenton, NJ.
