Arts at Bucks Festivities Kick Off Wednesday

Events, which include visual arts, theater, music poetry and more, begin Wednesday and run through May 1.

The month-long Arts at Bucks festival kicks off this week at Bucks County Community College. Events, which include visual arts, theater, music poetry and more, begin Wednesday and run through May 13.  

Here is a look at some of the events BCCC has planned:

Visual Arts Events

From 1 to 4 p.m. on May 4, the Department of the Arts opens its doors for free demonstrations, gallery receptions, open studios, and more. Demonstrations include woodturning, glassblowing, printmaking, and a bronze foundry pour. In addition, students will be selling their arts and crafts in the Hicks Art Center courtyard. On May 1, the 49th Annual Student Exhibition opens in the Hicks Art Center Gallery, running through May 13. An awards ceremony takes place at 2 p.m. May 4 during the department’s open house. Admission is free. For gallery hours, visit www.bucks.edu/gallery

Artmobile, the college’s traveling outreach museum, is on display adjacent to the Hicks Art Center Gallery. Visitors can take in the interactive exhibition “A Fine Line: Observation, Discovery & Expression in Drawing” from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 30 and May 1; 1 to 4 p.m. May 4; and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday May 5. Admission is free.

Students studying film and video production get their chance to shine at from 5 to 6:30 p.m. May 7, when the juried annual BCCC Film Festival takes place in the Gateway Auditorium. The festival is free and open to the public.

Musical Events

Other Arts at Bucks events include “Pretty Melodies – for People Who Dig That Sort of Thing,” a CD release concert at 8 p.m. April 19 in the Gateway Auditorium. The premiere performance of the latest CD from the Jeff Baumeister Quartet features Professor Baumeister and fellow jazz faculty members Len Pierro, Paul Gehman, and Mark Pultorak. Admission is free.

Acclaimed singer, songwriter, and musician Chuck Brodsky presents a free concert at 8 p.m. May 3 in the Presser Music Room, located in the Music & Multimedia Center.

Students will perform free concerts April 16, 28, and 30, and May 1, 5, 7, and 8The student concerts take place in the Presser Music Room.

Poetry & Lectures

The college’s Wordsmiths Reading Series presents a poetry reading with Eve Shockley at 7:30 p.m. April 25Author of several collections of poetry, including the new black, winner of the 2012 Hurston/Wright Legacy Award in Poetry, Shockley is also the author of the critical study Renegade Poetics: Black Aesthetics and Formal Innovation in African American Poetry. The free reading takes place in the Orangery.

The seventh annual Tyler Gardens & Landscaping Lecture takes place at 9:30 a.m. April 26 in the Gateway Auditorium. Derek Fell, renowned horticultural writer and photographer, will share how Monet’s garden in Giverny, France became the masterpiece setting for many Impressionist paintings. Tickets are $15, and $7 for students.

At 7 p.m. on May 2 and 3, an improvisational comedy performance directed by Bill McLaughlin takes place in the Gateway Auditorium, featuring nearly two dozen students.  Admission is $7.
