WTC Piece to be Displayed at Northampton Days

The 15th annual festival will have a World Trade Center artifact on display.

This year's Northampton Days falls on the tenth anniversary of Sept. 11, a fact members of the committee said some residents aren't happy about. However, an update to this year's flag raising ceremony might cause a change of heart.

Northampton Days will have an i-beam on display at the festival and during the flag ceremony thanks to a loan from Council Rock South. The school has plans to take the piece and incorporate it into the second sculpture in its Sculpture Garden later this year.

But, for Sept. 11, the 3-foot beam will be proudly on display for all who want to witness a small, steely part of history. The delicate artifact, which visitors will only be allowed to look at, not touch, will be guarded at all times throughout the day, committee members agreed on last night.

The i-beam "was moved to the inspection hanger after the towers fell," said Chris Scarpill, event organizer. "These artifacts are now being released to organizations who can articulate an appropriate way to commemorate these objects."

"We are all going to be talking about it," said Township Supervisor Eileen Silver, referring to the anniversay of 9/11. "It's nice to be with community on that very, very special day."

Dan Alexy, an event organizer who also works at Council Rock South, said it is a very unique artifact.

Northampton Days is on schedule for all the regular events and fun this year including the Talent Show, Car Show, Parade, local bands' performances, appearances by beloved mascots, a blood drive, petting zoo and many other fair favorites.
