Relay For Life Organizer Gets Purple Mohawk

Council Rock North junior Dan Pomerantz got a mohawk this weekend because local Relay For Life fundraisers met a benchmark goal in advance of the June 8 event.

Council Rock North junior Dan Pomerantz got a new hairstyle last weekend. And he’s hoping it will raise awareness of the effort to help cure cancer.

Pomerantz is organizing the local Relay For Life, a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society to be held June 8 at Council Rock High School North.

This past Sunday, Pomerantz got a purple mohawk, which he promised he’d do if relay participants raised $7,500 by April 30.

During the event, to be held from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., participants walk laps around a track and celebrate those who have survived their battle with cancer.

According to organizers, the event commences with a survivor's lap, where anyone who has battled cancer walks around the track.

Relay for Life fundraising has since passed the $7,500 benchmark. As of Wednesday evening, there are 146 participants who have raised more than $11,400 according to the event website (www.relayforlife.org/panewtown).

Pomerantz said he expects about 250 people total to participate.

Pomerantz was motivated to organize the Relay for Life in Newtown after participating in a similar event while living in North Carolina. “I realized that these events were amazing community building opportunities, so I decided to start one here,” he said.

“We intend to make Relay for Life an annual event at Council Rock,” he said.
