Bucks County Community College’s Arts at Bucks Celebration gets underway this week and will feature free concerts, demonstrations, exhibitions and more in a series of events that are open to the public. Many of the events are free. The month-long celebration begins Wednesday and goes through May 14. "The annual Arts at Bucks festival showcases the talent and academic excellence available at the public, two-year school," according to a BCCC press release. BCCC is one of the few community colleges in the nation that is an accredited institutional member of both the National Association of Schools of Music and the National Association of Schools of Art and Design, the press release said. Meghan Jusczak will be honored at a Newtown campus poetry reading Sunday April 21. She’ll be joined by runners-up and finalists in a celebration of young poets from across Bucks County.
Meghan Jusczak, a senior at Central Bucks East High School, has been named the 2013 Bucks County High School Poet of the Year, Bucks County Community College officials announced. The Doylestown resident rose to the top of 145 entries to win the 26th annual contest, part of the Bucks County Poet Laureate Program administered by the college. Jusczak, who was named third-runner-up last year, won a $300 prize and will be honored at a Newtown campus poetry reading at 3 p.m. Sunday. She’ll be joined by runners-up and finalists in a celebration of young poets from across Bucks County. Come for fundraising, stay for the arts. That could be the mantra for Saturday night's black tie optional gala to support the Bristol Riverside Theatre. The 26-year-old performance arts venue situated in Bristol Borough is staging an event to recognize Bucks County Commissioner Robert Loughery, who, according to Stephanie King, the theatre's individual and corporate giving manager, was instrumental in helping BRT secure an $85,00, interest-free five-year loan from Bucks County. "He has always been a big supporter of the arts," King said, adding that the theatre has recently added a new scene shop, and a new rehearsal space. "We have a lot of buildings all over Bristol." The 18th Annual Bucks County High School Art Exhibition opens today at Bucks County Community College’s Hicks Art Center Gallery. The exhibit will be on display through April 9. The show features more than 200 works of art in a variety of media such as painting, drawing, photography, graphic design, stained glass, sculpture, ceramics, printmaking, and jewelry. The works were submitted by 48 art teachers from 17 high schools throughout the county. It is coordinated by faculty member Cris Martino. Several college faculty members have chosen one first-place and three honorable-mention winners for the annual Congressional Art Contest. Fiction writer Ben Marcus is coming to Bucks County Community College as part of the Wordsmith Reading Series.
Fiction writer Ben Marcus will come to Newtown next month for a reading at Bucks County Community College on April 5. The reading, part of Bucks County Community College’s Wordsmiths Reading Series, will be held from 11 a.m. to noon. The event is free and open to the public. Marcus, a New York City-based author, has written four books, including "The Age of Wire and String" and his newest novel, "The Flame Alphabet." His work has been published in The New Yorker, The Paris Review, The New York Times, Salon, McSweeney's and Time. He is the recipient of the Morton Dauwen Zabel Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, a Whiting Writers Award, a NEA Fellowship in fiction and three Pushcart Prizes. The jazz festival begins at 6 p.m. Saturday at Council Rock North.
Nine local high school bands will compete at a "Jazz at the Rock" event this Saturday. The event begins at 6 p.m. at Council Rock High School North. The cost to attend is $10 for the general public and $8 for students. According to organizers, three middle school bands and the Council Rock North Jazz Band will also perform in exhibition.
