Will Kids Get to Trick-or-Treat?

Did Hurricane Sandy ruin Halloween for children, or will the kids still get to trick-or-treat tonight?

Since Northampton Township doesn't schedule trick-or-treating dates or times for the community, it is up to the individual neighborhoods and streets to decide what to do about Halloween this year.

Since many areas are still without power, some residents have said that neighborhood associations might not be able to get the message out to the community. It may just be up to whether parents want to take their children house to house.

If you're area is still planning on having trick-or-treating tonight, or if it's being rescheduled for another date and time, let us know in the comments so Patch can help spread the word.

I believe the surrounding areas are rescheduling Halloween for Saturday at 2 to 5 pm. I love this idea. Its about the kids and being SAFE!

We are asking that Halloween activities be postponed until Saturday evening. Downed lines and debris pose hazzards to our residents. In addition 9000 residents are without power and street lighting is out in many areas.

Well it's hard to trick or treat in complete darkness. If the street lights are out its dangerous

After discussions with Chief Pilla, Nancy Opalka, and our Twp Manager, we have decided it best for the safety of our Township's children and residents to postpone Halloween Trick-or-Treat activities to this Saturday between 2 - 6 pm.
PECO reported that we still had 9,000 homes without power. Despite great round-the-clock efforts by our Police and Public Works personnel, and PECO crews, the storm damage has been too extensive and widespread. We still have trees lying against live power wires, and dangling transformers that PECO crews have yet to reach. PECO has advised that 85 to 90% of the remaining homes will not come back on-line until Thursday and/or Friday. Our neighbors on short spur streets and isolated cul-de-sacs may not have power until after the weekend.
While roads are now passable, there remains much tree and other hurricane debris strewn in yards that our residents understandably have not had time to remove. And with many neighborhoods without street lights to begin with and now no or little accessory lighting available by our homeowners, it creates an unacceptable hazard for our Trick-or-Treaters, especially the younger ones but also the older children who otherwise often move across unlit yards which are now strewn with tree debris that poses unacceptable tripping hazards.

It was for these reasons that it was deemed best to postpone Trick-or-Treat until this Saturday Nov. 3rd between 2 and 6 pm.

It's not stupid...it's safe! Too many downed trees and power outtages. Halloween isn't cancelled...just postponed. Not a big deal when it comes to keeping residents safe

Bob Pellegrino has just informed me that the new date for Trick or Treating is Wednesday, November 7. Apparently Saturday conflicted with a large CRUSA tournament. Middletown and Bristol are doing it next Wednesday. Apologies for the confusion, but as you can imagine the situation is very fluid

I am glad to see that Northampton made a decision. I was very disappointed at first when I was told that the township had nothing to do with Halloween whatsoever. We are a community and a decision needed to be made and so I am glad that finally the township made one. Thank you!

Our neighborhood (and several others according to FB) T-or-T-ed tonight. We had power, we had candy, and the kids were out. I'm guessing it'll be lights off here next week when the next storm is hitting. Hope you all take your kids to other communities Friday & Saturday so they don't miss out all together.
