Township Takes Steps to Prevent Another Cell Tower Debacle

The Northampton Board of Supervisors have approved two ordinances they hope will avoid another cell tower fight.

The Northampton Township Board of Supervisors on Wednesday approved two ordinances that they hope will prevent a battle similar to the one fought with American Tower Corporation.

Last year, dozens of Northampton residents were outraged when the private company began installing new towers in their neighborhoods without notification.  A settlement was reached between the township and the company but now local officials are taking steps to ensure a similar situation does not reoccur.

The ordinances include a telecommunications facilities ordinance and a right-of-way management ordinance.

The right-of-way ordinance includes a strict permitting process for construction of facilities in the public right-of-way, according to the Courier Times. It also puts into place various insurance and bonding protections.

The telecommunications ordinance includes requirements for location and maintenance of cell towers within the township, the Courier Times reports.

Get over it, this is progress. Do you want to ban airplanes from flying over you house?

Let us not forget the that our local government (supervisors) failed us in the first place. Still can't understand why they can't use existing poles for their equipment.
